According to the Patent Index 2024 by the European Patent Office, Switzerland filed more patents per capita than any other country – with 1,140 patent applications per million inhabitants. That’s more than twice as many as Sweden in second place!
The most active sector? Medical technology, followed by measurement tech, consumer goods, and electrical machinery.
Roche and ABB topped the list of Swiss innovators, while Germany remains Europe’s leader in total applications.
Switzerland also showed impressive growth in filings: +3.2% compared to last year – one of the sharpest increases in Europe.
Innovation is clearly in Switzerland’s DNA – and the world is taking notice.
